Do I need to set up an appointment to bring a computer in?
Nope! We take all service jobs in on a first-come, first-serve
basis. Consequently, the best we can do is to give you a general
guess of a time estimate. If you need your PC back in a hurry, ask
us about our Expedited Service.
Do you work on Apple/Macintosh/etc?
Honestly, right now, no. To us, an Apple might as well be a
spaceship, as we literally have no experience with them. However, we
are working on a "Mac Day" for all you crazy Apple users to bring
your little bundles of joy in for some assistance. We don't have any
details as of yet, but it should be coming.
I've heard from a "techie" friend that you're always
better off buying a new PC. Is that true?
At SSI Computers, we base that kind of decision on two things:
The functionality of the PC, and what the user is looking to do with
it. Say you have a computer that is 5 years old. Yeah, that's a bit
on the old side, but if you're just going online and looking at
websites and printing things, etc. you may be just fine. We believe
in doing what's best and most economical for our customers.
True, sometimes you have to ditch an old PC and move on, but often
you can put a little more money into it and get enough time out of
an old PC to get you ready for a new one.
We figure: Sure we lose a PC sale today, but when you treat your
customers right, you'll gain one in the future.
Can we leave our PC on all the time?
This is one of those questions we get pretty often, and everybody
has a different opinion. In general, computers are designed to run
24x7 without any major issues. However, something to keep in mind is
that your computer IS a machine. Additionally all those little parts
inside your computer do have a service life. In general, they're
designed to run with reasonable use for 3-5 years.
Many things will affect the life expectancy of your computer,
however. Dust, heat, humidity and other things can all have an
effect on the lifetime of your PC. But, in general, you can leave a
PC on all the time with no hardware impact.
We recommend shutting your PC down weekly, though, because the
Microsoft Windows Operating System will run more smoothly if you
periodically shut it down. Doing a complete shutdown of Windows
cleans up running files, straightens up some things, and generally
does a housekeeping for the next time you boot your computer up.
Also, one thing to keep in mind when your computer is running all
the time is that it will be constantly pulling air through the
system. With the air comes a lot of dust, and you're going to want
to keep up on cleaning it. SSI can clean your computer with an
anti-static vacuum for $10. We recommend that at least every six
months.
